Men’s Mind Matters

This week June 15th – 21st, 2015 is Men’s Mental Health Week! On twitter, I have seen such great effort

by many people to bring men’s health into the spotlight. Also on June 16, 2015 it was men’s mental health day.

We often speak about women and girls mental health issues and neglect the hidden truth,

that their many men who are suffering in silence with a mental illness. Some of these mental illnesses

that men are struggling with are are; schizophrenia, bipolar, and post natal depression.

A mental illness can affect anyone regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion, socio-economic status

etc. Society has placed a great burden on men to be machismo, and as a result they hide their true feelings.

Research has shown that more men are reluctant to visit a physician to get a medical examination, compared

to women. It’s time to have an open and honest discussion about men’s health, especially their mental health,

as men’s mind matters.

Therefore, it’s imperative that we address the emotional needs of men and boys, to improve the psychological

well-being of all people. Phrases such as “man up” and “boys don’t cry”, have become societal norms which should

be challenged. It gives the misnomer that men with emotions are not strong.

It’s time to change the status quo, so that men with mental health issues can feel empowered to take control of

their mental well-being. Please join me.
