Today is September 10, 2023, and it is World Suicide Prevention Day – Why are we not talking about it? Suicide is a major public health problem with far-reaching social, emotional and economic consequences.
More than 700,000 people die by suicide every year. For each suicide, there are likely more than 20 suicide attempts. Suicide occurs throughout life. It was the fourth leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds globally in 2019. Suicide occurs in all regions of the world. In fact, 77% of global suicides happen in low- and middle-income countries. ( Source WHO)
“Creating Hope Through Action” is the triennial theme for the World Suicide Prevention Day from 2021-2023. This theme serves as a powerful call to action and a reminder that there is an alternative to suicide and that we can encourage hope and strengthen prevention through our actions.
